GTA: Chinatown Wars

I love stealing these trucks.

Didn’t do any missions, just mucked about getting used to the controls again, then stole an Ammunation truck and found a rocket launcher.

Hooray!

Of course, I blew myself up with it, but only when firing the last rocket. That’s better than normal.

Truly a fantastic game. According to my save file I’ve played over twenty hours of the game – and that’s after completing it on the DS!

Ten iPhone Games To Play In March 2010 http://inverty.com/2010/03/03/ten-iphone-games-to-play-in-march-2010/ http://inverty.com/2010/03/03/ten-iphone-games-to-play-in-march-2010/#comments Wed, 03 Mar 2010 15:46:25 +0000 That Rev Chap http://inverty.com/?p=5811 A break from the usual list of the ten iPhone games I judge to be the best, here’s a list of ten games to play during this month. All will be great games, but they’ll be selected based on a mix of quality, novelty and relevance to the month’s events.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds

It's... smashing!

Angry Birds is one of the very best games you’ll find on the App Store. You pull back a catapult to launch birds at structures set up the evil, egg-stealing green pigs, aiming to knock them and destroy the pigs inside. The levels are wonderfully designed, for the most part, with luck playing a much smaller part in proceedings than you might think when you first play. It’ll take a few days to get through all the levels – there are about a hundred of them now – and there’s tons of replay value in trying to get all three stars for every level and get good scores on the global leaderboards. A huge, well-deserved success.

Canabalt

Canabalt

Your daring escape is doomed to fail.

The devloper’s next iPhone game, Gravity Hook, is coming out soon, so what better time to revisit Canabalt? Not that you need any excuse. Canabalt is a masterpiece of one-touch gameplay and atmosphere. Perfectly playable without sound, the soundtrack nevertheless heightens the tension and makes the simple act of running and jumping feel like humanity’s last hope for survival.

Dungeon Solitaire

Dungeon Solitaire

Spend two minutes going through the tutorial and this screen will make sense.

New to the App Store, this is a fantastic solitaire game, based around fighting with fantasy-themed cards. There are monsters, zombies and dragons stacked up against your band of heros. Though the luck of the draw is important, as in all solitaire games, a wide variety of cards and tactical options make this much more interesting than your standard solitaire game. Very highly recommended.

Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy

Turn-based battling like grandpa used to make.

Also new to the App Store, but a long, long way from being a new game, here comes the game that started it all. Updated graphics and toned-down difficulty make for a much friendlier game than the NES original and the lack of story and cut scenes means you’ll be able to spend a lot of your time actually playing the game. It may be simple compared to later games in the series, but that doesn’t hurt a bit on a mobile platform.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

GTA: Chinatown Wars

Yes, it's quite violent at times.

A giant of a game, this towers over the other games available on the iPhone, puts its hands on its hips and roars with laughter. An absolutely huge game, with great controls, this brings the humour, the carnage and the city you love to the iPhone. Alongside the story, there are all sorts of side missions, along with a hugely addictive drugs economy that you can use to earn money. It’s pretty much perfect and, for my money, is the best game on the App Store by a country mile.

Noby Noby Boy

Noby Noby Boy

It's a toy, not a game, but it's a good one.

Not, perhaps, the best game you’ll ever play on your iPhone. In fact, it’s not really game at all, simply a suite of little toys and mini apps. Think of it as a toy, though, and it’s brilliant. You can mess around stretching, flicking and breaking BOY, check the time, import photos, even browse the web. It’s all very silly and lightweight, but has a huge amount of charm. If you’re anything like me, you’ll keep coming back every now and again, just for the joy of it.

Orbital

Orbital

Make circles. Then destroy them.

Everybody loves Orbital. Well, okay, not quite everybody. It’s a harsh mistress, where a single mistake spells death, so some lily-livered types find it off-putting, but most people play a couple of games and fall in love. It’s all about angles and sensible shooting, wrapped up in neon explosions in the emptiness of space. It’s horribly addictive – especially if your Facebook friends are also playing it – and all three modes offer something different. It’s not got the humour and scope of Grand Theft Auto or the cartoon charm of Angry Birds, but it’s got claws of cold steel that grab you and won’t let go.

Power Pros

Power Pros

Play ball!

It’s March, which means baseball is back. There’s a whole host of baseball games on the App Store and most of them have something going for them, but at the moment I’m playing Konami’s Power Pros. It’s easy to pick up, well-presented and cute. It may not have real players, but it feels right. Go Panthers!

Robot Rampage

Robot Rampage

Die, puny buildings, die!

If you’re playing Canabalt, you might as well play this, too. It’s the flip side of that game, where instead of being an escaping human, you’re a giant robot bent on destruction. Why you’ve been programmed to be unable to move past a city block unless its been completely destroyed I don’t know, but that’s the situation you find yourself in. You stomp through the city, destroying everything in your path. Buildings, trees… and the army. Soldiers are fried and squished, tanks explode, helicopters fall in flames. Eventually the armed forces will bring you down, that’s inevitable, but it’s great fun to see how far you can get before you fall.

Words With Friends

Words With Friends

It's not quite Scrabble... but it's pretty close.

You always need Words With Friends. It’s a bit unstable at times and not as balanced as Scrabble, but it makes up for it with a huge userbase and ease of use. If you’ve got any interest in word games, you need this. There’s no single player, but that doesn’t matter given how easy it is to start an online game. I’m always up for new challengers and I’m easily beatable, so if you want a game, I’m ThatRevChap. So good it’s got a permanent space on my dock.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (iPhone) http://inverty.com/2010/01/29/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-iphone-12/ http://inverty.com/2010/01/29/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-iphone-12/#comments Fri, 29 Jan 2010 12:47:09 +0000 That Rev Chap http://inverty.com/?p=3299 Mainly rampages this lunchtime, which sits well with a quick go sat at my desk. No flamethrowers, sadly, but I did get to use a big, fun machine gun and an amusing rocket launcher. Shame I managed to blow myself up with the rocket launcher, but I did bisect a cop in the same explosion, so that’s okay.

GTA: Chinatown Wars

He may be dead.

Nothing beats the mini gun I found in an Ammunation truck, though.

GTA: Chinatown Wars

My precious...

That was special, for the few seconds it lasted. Managed to get away from the cops afterwards, too, which is always a bonus.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (iPhone) http://inverty.com/2010/01/28/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-iphone-11/ http://inverty.com/2010/01/28/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-iphone-11/#comments Thu, 28 Jan 2010 09:36:08 +0000 That Rev Chap http://inverty.com/?p=3258 Guess what? I found another flamethrower rampage last night! I really should be marking these on my map, because I don’t think they get automatically added. So far I’ve only been manually adding weapons and armour – yellow stars for weapons, blue for armour.

I also managed to hijack another Ammunation truck. That’s probably my favourite activity. Sometimes you can get them easily, but more often each attempt turns into a huge Michael Bay-style set piece, with huge chases, bullets flying and cops screaming in from every direction.

GTA: Chinatown Wars

What will I find? A flamethrower? A machine gun? It's like Christmas!

It’s hugely satisfying to finally grab the truck and make it back to a secluded safe house without it blowing up on you. The weapon you get from doing it is simply a bonus, really. It’s the hunt that keeps me coming back for more. (I’ve had less success with drugs vans. They seem to be much faster and consequently harder to catch.)

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (iPhone) http://inverty.com/2010/01/27/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-iphone-10/ http://inverty.com/2010/01/27/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-iphone-10/#comments Wed, 27 Jan 2010 09:10:27 +0000 That Rev Chap http://inverty.com/?p=3238 So, is there any point in putting the “(iPhone)” bit in the title of the post now I’m using categories and all? I’ll have to ponder that.

Anyway, I had an immensely fun time with Chinatown Wars last night. I didn’t play for hours and hours, with just a relatively short play session, but I packed a lot in.

GTA: CW

Not the best angle for a billboard jump, but it worked.

Mostly police chases, it has to be said. I kept being seen getting up to no good and got busted far too many times. Never much of an issue, though, and one of the busts led to me discovering a flamethrower rampage, so I’m rather grateful for that.

GTA: CW

Set me on fire! Kerosene!

There’s something very satisfying about setting people and cars on fire and running past flaming gang members and exploding cars, watching your points tick up all the time. Maybe somewhere deep down I’m a pyromaniac, because this rampage was my favourite so far by quite a long way – even beating out the rocket launcher rampage I found the other day.

It’s the game that keeps on giving, it really is.

I think I only did one actual story mission over the weekend, but I did at least one side mission, too. I spent most of my time dealing drugs to get some more money – I’d lost it all and had to bankroll my first buy with a trip to the kart track, again – and poking around in dumpsters for weapons. I’ve marked all the locations I’ve found on my map for future reference, something I really should have done in the DS version.

GTA IV: The Lost and Damned (360) http://inverty.com/2010/01/25/gta-iv-the-lost-and-damned-360-7/ http://inverty.com/2010/01/25/gta-iv-the-lost-and-damned-360-7/#comments Mon, 25 Jan 2010 10:31:00 +0000 That Rev Chap http://inverty.com/?p=3150 Finally finished off The Lost and Damned yesterday, after taking a break of many months. I was right near the end, so it didn’t take long. The Diamonds In The Rough mission took a few goes, but it was pretty much plain sailing after that.

The game does seem increasingly unfriendly – lack of mission checkpoints, having to go home to save manually – but the driving model is still great, the shooting still weighty and explosive and Liberty City is still an amazing place to visit. The sheer detail of it all is staggering.

Anyway, now the way is clear for some Gay Tony action at some point.

The first bright spot was that I am actually able to play games again – ModNation Racers didn’t permanently put me off. I was quite able to spend an enjoyable half hour or so with Chinatown Wars today.

High and lows, though.

HIGH: Completed my first Unique Stunt Jump.

Okay, so the car ended up on its roof and I had to run away before it exploded, but I completed the jump. I love the way the camera goes all Matrix when you jump through a billboard. It’s a fantastic little effect.

HIGH: Shot down a police helicopter with an SMG.

I didn’t even realise you could do that, but I managed it. And then I ducked into my safe house and lost my wanted rating. Ha!

LOW: Lost all my money.

Yes, I lost all my money again, in another heroin deal gone bad. Up there you can see the hospital taking the last of my cash. I guess it’ll be back to the kart track for me. Or maybe I’ll actually do a mission or two.

EXCITEMENT!

I had a fun lunchtime.

Took me a few – very careful – trips, but I got there easily enough. Now I have a new safehouse and have opened up more weapons to buy.

By far the best thing that happened last night was hijacking an Ammunation truck, though.

No, not that one. That one got away.

I found another one that I actually managed to get home and open. (Incidentally, I’m having trouble opening up trucks. It looks like I’ve cut through the doors okay, but the game doesn’t agree. Still, you can retry if you mess up, so it’s not a big deal.)

Inside was a flamethrower.

Much fun was had, in the thirty seconds or so it took me to run out of ammo, set myself on fire and die.
